A Very Haunting Song:Ode To Billie Joe By Bobbie Gentry

There are a lot of reasons why these days I only to my rare and classic 24K tunes. Songs back then were so good that they made use stop what you're doing and listen to the song from start to finish. That riveting effect comes from the fact that sound was cool and the lyrics were deep. Some even tell tales that leave a haunting feeling that sticks with you for a while. One such song that does that is Bobbie Gentry's "Ode To Billie Joe".

I remember hearing this song one lazy summer afternoon which tells a tale about a boy's suicide by jumping off the Tallahatchie Bridge and narrated a young girl who knew him. There was a lot of mystery surrounding the Billie's death which was heighten by the fact that narrator and Billie threw something down the bridge which could be key for his jumping off the bridge. Some time later the girl still goes by the bridge and throws flowers there. It was clear that something happened between the two of them but what it was is never revealed. It's all left to the listeners to figure it out.

I remember that a novel and even a movie was made based on the song. It gave it's own interpretation on what happened to Billie Joe. As for me, this is one of the deepest songs that I've ever heard. The fact that it leaves an impression on you is a testament to how good it is. It sure left an impression on me. This is the reason why I consider this a very haunting song but good a good one at that.
