Even Vampires Get The Blues: Love Song For A Vampire By Annie Lennox

Well tomorrow is Halloween and every will probably be donning their ghoulish costumes and accompanying their kids as they go from door to door looking for treats. Most probably there will zombies, Frankenstein's monsters, werewolfs and mummies and of course the most dashing of all, the vampire. Before, vampires were portrayed as simply blood-sucking creatures or the night who were slain by either Van Helsing of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, but these days, they are given more humanity and sometimes are portrayed as the good guys. Of all the mythical creatures of the night, none has captured our attention more than the vampire. The idea of giving a vampire more emotion and depth reminds me of the song "Love Song For A Vampire" by Annie Lennox.

This song was the soundtrack for the movie Dracula back in the 1990s. Though it followed the storyline, it gave it a little twist by giving the vampire a reason for wanting to be immortal was find his beloved. In the end, it was Nina who released him from his curse and ended his life. Though I wish they gave Jonathan Harker more depth but instead he became a prop. Worse was the fact that they made Van Helsing look like a lunatic mad scientist who was more deranged than the Count. Still it was a pretty good movie and they let Dracula show some of his sensitive side, while retaining the equalities which would keep us awake at night.

I only thing that I don't like with the vampire genre these days is they make them look too good while us ordinary people are made to look like paranoid dark ages lynch mob. Other movies and television shows portray often portray humans who are seduced by the mystery that they have and in some cases revel in knowing that they were able to "score" with the undead. Sometimes, they make it look like they're either flirting with the forbidden or acting like nerds who now have a big stick since their undead spouses watch over them. Oh well for me, I still like this song and I'm glad that it's getting more airtime. In the end, I guess even vampires get the blues.
